Google Drive Says Storage Is Full After You Deleted Files
You deleted a lot from Google Drive, but the storage meter has barely moved and Google still refuses new uploads.
Why this happens
- Drive does not have its own quota. The 15 GB on a free account is shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, so the thing filling it is frequently not in Drive at all — large email attachments and years of photo backups are the usual culprits.
- Deleted files stay in Trash for 30 days and keep counting against the quota the entire time. Deleting without emptying Trash frees nothing.
- Files shared with you do not count against your quota, but files you own still count even when they live in someone else’s folder — so tidying your own Drive view does not necessarily reduce what you are storing.
- Google Photos in original quality counts in full. Storage Saver compresses, but only affects what you upload afterwards, not what is already there.
What to do

Open the Google storage manager, which breaks usage down across Drive, Gmail and Photos — this tells you where the space has actually gone before you delete anything else.

Empty Drive Trash, then Gmail Trash and Spam, then the Photos bin. Each is separate and each holds its own deleted items.

Search Gmail for large attachments and clear the ones you do not need.

If your files matter more than the free tier, copy them to another provider before deleting anything — a transfer verifies each file at the destination, so you are not deleting originals on trust.
If that is not it: If the meter is correct and you simply have more data than 15 GB, no amount of clearing Trash helps — the choice is paying Google for more space or moving the bulk somewhere with cheaper or one-time pricing.
Common questions
Why is Google Drive still full after I deleted everything?
Almost always one of two things: deleted files are still in Trash and count for 30 days, or the space is being used by Gmail or Google Photos, which share the same 15 GB. Check the storage manager rather than Drive alone.
Does emptying Trash free up space immediately?
Usually within a few minutes, though the meter can lag by an hour or so. If it has not moved after that, the space is being used somewhere other than Drive.
Do files shared with me use my storage?
No. Only files you own count against your quota, wherever they sit. A shared folder full of someone else’s files costs you nothing.
Is it cheaper to move files elsewhere than to buy Google storage?
It depends on whether the data keeps growing. Google One is a monthly subscription for as long as you keep the files. Moving an archive you rarely touch to a provider with lifetime or cheaper storage is a one-off cost — the transfer itself is $7 to $49 by size, paid once.
